Plasma Pen Treatment
What is The Plasma Pen Treatment?
The Plasma Pen Treatment is NON-SURGICAL – NON-INVASIVE!
The Plasma Pen device is able to significantly tighten, lift, resurface, rejuvenate and regenerate any area of the skin. The Plasma Pen forces the skin tissue to contract virtually immediately by thermally disturbing the skin as well as fibroblasts. The micro trauma stimulates new collagen (neocollagenesis) and helps release and activate essential proteins and growth factors like cytokines and fibroblasts, which make more collagen than before it was disrupted.
New collagen continues to be formed over a period of 12 weeks following treatment.
Why the Plasma Pen?
As we age, the dermal layer thins, less collagen is produced, the elastin fibres which provide our elasticity wear out and all the changes in the scaffolding of the skin cause it to wrinkle and sag.
In simple terms – our skin loses laxity and texture as we grow older. It becomes loose, it sags and line and wrinkles appear. Think of it like scaffolding of a building if it were to rust, weaken and become unable to bear load or maintain flexibility – it will eventually sag and collapse.
Plasma Pen and pioneering blepharoplasty, sublimation and soft surgery fibro-blasting technique is designed to help dramatically repair, reverse & mitigate all those effects by using state-of-the-art technology, proven science and sophisticated technique, best practice, excellent training and our aftercare.
How does the Plasma Pen work to tighten skin?
The technical part: There are 4 states of matter, Solid, Liquid, Gas and Plasma. Plasma energy is created when a gas passes through an electromagnetic field to create ionised gas partials in the air between the device tip and the skin. The tiny holes created in the skin with the Plasma Pen turns solid into gas, therefore the plasma energy turns the skin to a gaseous state. This process is called sublimation. When the skin is treated via sublimation, the elastic fibres shrink. This tightens and retracts the skin and the results of this are similar to those of surgery but without the scaring and lengthy downtime.
The Plasma Pen causes a ‘micro trauma’ to the surface skin tissue to immediately contract and tighten, this creates an instant lift and dramatic skin tightening. The epidermis is rejuvenated as old cells are caused to shed and they are replaced by fresh new cells. Fibroblasts in the dermis are also targeted by thermal disruption and as a result collagen and elastin production, alignment and cross linking is stimulated. This strengthens, plumps, inflates and lifts the structure of the skin over a sustained period of time. We help to re-shape, re-build and strengthen the scaffolding within the dermis to give it renewed elasticity and flexibility.
The treatment helps to activate and release important proteins in the dermis to regulate cell maturation (ageing) which encourages tissue regeneration and repair. The highly accurate and controlled trauma we cause to the epidermis makes the skin dry superficially into tiny carbon crusts which fall off within a few days leaving beautiful, new and rejuvenated skin at the surface. The magic then continues for 12+ weeks – Plasma Pen is the gift that keeps giving!

How is the Plasma Pen different to surgery?
The effects achieved by this treatment are comparable to that of surgery but has many advantages over such invasive methods:
- The only treatment outside plastic surgery which can be performed on the eyelids
- No injectable/general anaesthetic required
- No scalpels, no cutting of the skin, no ablation and no scarring
- No stitches/sutures required post-treatment
- Very low risk procedure without medical risk or potentially life changing complications
- Minimal side effect and very short downtimes
- Quick and easy procedure with rapid recovery, most clients are able to return to work the same day
- More uniform than ablative resurfacing using lasers
- We are able to treat the delicate eye area safely, as well as practically any area of the skin/body
- No thinning of the skin and more uniform than ablative resurfacing using laser
- No risk of asymmetry or overcorrection
- Enormous cost saving compared to comparable alternatives
- Long-lasting results
Non-surgical fibroblast skin tightening is also an affordable alternative to Botox, fillers, dermaroller and similar treatments – the cost savings are significant especially given the dramatic and long-lasting results (usually around 3 years with many results permanent!).
Does it hurt?
We recommend you arrive to your appointment 15 mins prior to your appointment time for the application of anaesthetic. The treatment area will be numbed using topical anaesthetic so the treatment will not be painful but a mild tingling sensation may be experienced. The treatment may be moderately more uncomfortable on more sensitive areas such as the eyelids where the skin is at its thinnest. However, the treatments are very quick and efficient so this will minimise any potential discomfort.
Immediately following treatment, the area may feel slightly warm – we recommend a cold compress (covered in a lint cloth) over the area to reduce the heat sensation. We also supply you with an aftercare gel which is cooling and soothing and should be applied 3 times daily for 7 days following treatment.
How quickly will I see results and how long will they last?
Some initial superficial results can often be seen immediately and will continue to improve during the months following treatment. The skin will appear tighter and some lines will be diminished instantly. The collagen fibres will continue to rebuild and reproduce for 12 weeks following treatment, so you will continue to see the treatment area gradually improving. The effects can last up to 3 years and in some cases can be permanent. It is important to note that the Plasma Pen treatment will not stop the onset of further aging.
Once collagen is formed, the natural aging process of breaking down collagen will then take place. Intrinsic and extrinsic factors can contribute to collagen breakdown such as UV exposure, excessive alcohol consumption, poor diet and smoking. These are all contribution factors to further aging skin. Depending on the amount of sagging skin you may require more than one session.
How long does the treatment take?
The area will initially be numbed using topical anaesthetic for around 30mins prior to treatment, Treatment duration will depend on the area(s) being treated but typically it would take approximately 30-40 minutes to treat the upper or lower eye areas. We ask for you to arrive 15 mins prior to your appointment to complete the consultation form.
What to expect after the treatment?
The skin will have multiple millimetre trauma marks to the skins surface which appear in the formation of brown crusts on the skin surface and may last between 3 to 7 days. These crusts (carbon crusting) will dry up and fall off during the days following treatment, it is important not to pick/peel them off to prevent against infection, pigmentation or scarring. Weeping is a possibility but will settle quickly. There may also be mild swelling, especially if the eye area has been treated, but this is normal and to be expected. Swelling may last for 1 to 5 days.
The skin will appear pink in colour once the carbon crusts have fallen off, this is new skin and should be protected with SPF50 for the remaining 12 weeks. Full aftercare advice will be given to you when you leave the clinic.
How many treatments are required?
Often only one treatment will give dramatic results but the number of treatments required will depend on a number of factors such as personal expectations, the treatment area, the condition and severity of loose skin, the age of the client etc. Depending on the skins laxity, some clients may require further treatments to achieve optimal results often only one treatment is enough to achieve striking results.
Treatment results will continue to improve during the months following the procedure and can last up to three years, and can sometimes even be permanent making it a superb alternative to other treatments.
The minimum treatment interval is 12 weeks. A follow up treatment is made for 3 months as it can take 3 months for the new collagen fibres to form and at this stage a second or even third treatment can be undertaken to achieve the desired results.
Am I suitable for the treatment?
Plasma Pen treatments can only be performed on clients who are skin types I to III on the Fitzpatrick skin type scale. A full consultation will be completed prior to treatment to ensure there are no other contraindications which may prevent us from being able to proceed with treatment. During the consultation details of skin type, contraindications, medical history and lifestyle will be recorded to determine whether or not we can proceed with treatment. Full aftercare instructions will also be provided.
We ask clients to wait 21 days after having any Botox treatments, sun exposure or facials to undergo Plasma Pen Treatment. Once the treatment has been performed the client also needs to wait 21 days prior to going on in the sun and a SPF50 must be worn for 12 weeks following treatment, so carful planning is needed during the holiday season.
What are the complications with the Plasma Pen Treatment?
The treatment is very safe however on rare occasions you can get skin hypo-pigmentation (whitening) or hyperpigmentation (dark patches generally more common in darker skins).
Because of the risk of pigmentation issues, we do not advice anyone with a darker skin type to have this treatment. For clients with lighter skin, you can get persisting redness for a couple of months after the procedure.
We ask clients to wait 21 days after having any Botox treatments, sun exposure or facials to undergo Plasma Pen Treatment. How much does the treatment cost?
Treatment costs will vary according to the area(s) being treated but offer great value considering results can last for years in comparison to other treatments which require more maintenance. Upper eyelid (non-surgical blepharoplasty) treatment using Plasma Pen costs £350 and the only other alternative treatment which produces comparable results for this area is invasive surgery which could cost £3,000-£6,000 – this clearly demonstrates how cost-effective Plasma Pen treatments are in relation to alternative treatments.
If you wish to have more than one area treated – or if the same area requires more than one treatment to receive optimum results, then subsequent treatments are discounted and will be agreed at consultation.
Treatment cost will be confirmed during a consultation appointment however you can find all our prices on our price list PDF on the tab above:
The price of any additional treatments is reduced if you require more than one treatment in the same area.
